Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a Title I school, with 90% of our students on free or reduced-price meal plans. We have many English Language Learner (ELL) students at our school. Over half of my students are ELL students. Our students come from working families and families who speak other languages at home. Some parents are not able to communicate in English with us, but we do have Spanish-speaking translators on site.
Our staff is very caring and committed to providing a nurturing, fun, and engaging classroom for all our students.
We want students to know that we will be there for them and give them as much as we possibly can. One great thing about our school is that we have one-to-one devices, iPads or Chromebook computers. For many students, this is the first time they have been able to use and engage with today's technology.
My Project
This project is a variety of book series, such as Cam Jansen, Mercy Watson and many more. Having students read books that come in a series can actually improve their reading levels as they will become hooked on the books. I have seen kids read books that come in series and they often ask for the next book to read. This project will help me get more series books in our class that we do not have. I am asking for copies of over fifty books from a variety of different, popular series.
This project is a great way for me to build readers, one series at a time.
I am excited to find the Sofia Martinez series as these books reference Spanish words with the English language. Those will go great with my bilingual students. I was also glad to find Young Cam Jansen books that my students can read. Once they read through those they can move on to the Cam Jansen chapter books. I believe book series books are a great way to get more readers.
