Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach Kindergarten at a Title I public school where 100% of the students receive free lunch. Seven out of my 18 students are English language learners. Some of the students live under stressful circumstances and come from low income families. Their parents are immigrants so they are trying to adjust to a new culture and they also do not speak English. Some of these children have no parental figures, and others must care for their younger siblings. Seven of my students came into my classroom with no background knowledge. In spite of their circumstances, my students are eager to learn and love coming to school!
My Project
My kindergartners need math manipulatives including counters, magnetic ten frames, addition and subtraction math boards, and numbers houses to help my students decompose (break apart) numbers.
Using hands on math materials will help my students be engaged, build team work and communication skills while learning number sense and math problem solving skills.
These materials will be used in whole group lessons, and in centers with a partner. The skills that they will acquire with these resources include number ID, counting, decomposing numbers, comparing numbers, place value, addition, subtraction, and problem solving. The counters and games will be fun because they will cater to different learning styles!
