Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am an early childhood special education inclusion teacher in a Pre-Kindergarten classroom at an elementary school. My students with disabilities are fully included into the general education classroom and curriculum. The general education co-teacher and I lesson plan and deliver instruction in a collaborative model. Our students range in ages from 3-5 years old. I have two sessions each day. This year we had 30 typical children and 14 children with special needs in our program.

We have wanted to get a classroom pet for some time so my co-teacher and I decided to start with a few pet fish. We found this fantastic fish aquarium that is low-maintenance and classroom-safe. This is a great combination for Pre-K kids.

This easy-view aquarium is shaped like a sphere and magnifies the fish for up-close viewing. It comes with everything we need including filters, a water pump, a light, gravel, and plants. It even comes with fish food. So as soon as we get it we are ready to add the fish and the children can start observing their new pets. All they will need to do is pick out a name. Nemo is at the top of our list. No surprise there : )

At this age so many scientific concepts can be taught through observation. For children with special needs, sometimes teaching abstract concepts can be very challenging. I hope by providing them with something concrete I will peak their interest and motivate them to remain engaged. Having a classroom pet will teach them responsibility and give them an opportunity to experience all the joy that comes from having a pet. Your generosity will make all this fun possible! Thank you so much for your support.
