This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
What makes my students special? My students come from all over the world such as South Asia, South and Central America, and all parts of Africa and the Caribbean. These students left their capitals and villages to attend a school in one of the most poverty-stricken areas in New York, the South Bronx.
I have over 112 students that have been in this country for less than 4 years that are learning not only to adapt to the language but also to being away from their families and homes.
All of my students have experienced some form of trauma, whether it means moving to a new country or watching a loved one pass away. They have been dropped in a new country with strangers and sometimes ae taught early on to take care of themselves without knowing the basics of even traveling on a train or bus.
Some of my students have had terrible experiences such as war, gang activity, hunger and homelessness. Most of them do not know how to self regulate by dealing with their emotions. Most have been asked to forget and move on without dealing with feelings of anger, loss, and sadness.
My Project
All of your donations will help me be able to support my students in the way that pertains to them. My students will learn to remain calm by using the three R's- relating, relaxing and releasing. My goal is to be able to provide them with the tools needed to help them get through rough times.
Research says when owning a pet it helps us to channel our stresses by petting a cat or a dog.
By focusing their attention away from their stresses, I believe I will be able to see a positive change in my students.
Both the calming aquarium and the realistic toy dog can transform my environment to be one that is supportive and open which allow me to connect with my students on a deeper level in ways that they need. These items are also practical, small, and involve little to no mess.
