Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a teacher in a low income district with many of our students coming to this country as refugees. The students in my classroom are ages up to 5 at the preschool level. They are all students on the autism spectrum. Many of my students have caring families that do not have the resources to help their children realize their full potential and are struggling with giving their child the best they can while trying to understand their disability. It is my hope to give these students the best environment to reach their academic, social, and play goals through fun multi-dimentional and multi-sensory play and learning. . Many of them do not speak. Although they do not speak, they have so much to offer to those around them and have a great potential to learn and be the best that they can be. I feel it is my job and my pleasure to help these students realize their full potential while bridging the gap between home and school to support families as well.
My Project
All of our students are working toward social and play skill goals while also working on their pre-school academics. A water table and materials help students to work with their sensory issues and meet friends at a non-threatening center to interact and explore science as well as learn their letters with the bubble letter materials.
Light tables are a great way to use multi-sensory materials to teach letters, numbers, colors, and to address sensory issues.
Many of our students are non-verbal and struggle to interact.
Multi-sensory materials that are fun draws students in together to work on these skills in a fun and positive way without the necessity of being verbal.
