One-derful Students need Financial Literacy!

Help me give my students Math Manipulative Library of magnetic pieces, magnet boards, Rekenrek to 100, and OSMO Pizza so we can learn financial literacy in the primary grades.

My Students

My students speak multiple languages in varying degrees of English comprehension. We're a combination kindergarten and first grade class with 30 students. My students are fabulous and positive. They love to learn.

100% of our student population receives a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status.

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical." From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to teach my students to learn and love it.

My Project

Do you ever stay up late pondering how to solve complex problems with readily available tools? My kids do! They are full of curiosity and solutions to problems that are very real in their worlds.

Providing hands-on, engaging, and practical experiences for my students is a challenge.

Because my students are not exposed to the world due to financial challenges, I try to bring the action to them! Encouraging a love for financial literacy is a love of mine to teach. I recently discovered the OSMO Pizza Co. which will teach real world math. Students will be able to complete addition, subtraction and even fraction skills.

The Math Manipulative library is a basis for learning fractions, addition and subtraction. The magnetic boards will help in individual and group work in manipulating the numbers to see the answer. The Rekenrek to 100 will help those students who need manipulatives to maneuver and see the correct answers.

All the above will help students with their mathematical and financial thinking through hands-on problem solving and computer programing- skills for the next generation and beyond!
