Eight grade is an exciting and sometimes stressful time when students are establishing their values and deciding who they are! The students in my classroom have an insatiable thirst for knowledge, both formally and informally. As children of the 21st century, they need to be prepared to use technology to solve problems. My students rarely back down from a challenge. I'm most proud of the way they are developing a love for science and understand how it is related to any AND everything we interact with on a daily basis.
My students are the heartbeat of South Dallas and they will amaze you!
They are a group of 13-14-year-olds and in my humble opinion, they are modern-day geniuses because they still find a way to learn and grow despite the adversity they experience daily. They thrive off trust and relationship building; once those are established they've proven they can move mountains.
About 30% of my students are labeled as special education status. However, in our class, we do not live inside of labels and my ultimate goal is for them to understand their future role in our society at large.
All students deserve equity access to technology in the classroom. My duty as a middle school STEM educator is to prepare tomorrow's critical thinkers and problem solvers. My scholars have dreams of working for companies for like Google, Tesla, and Amazon. Although these dreams are attainable, I know there's a disparity in the practice they receive as compared to their more affluent peers.
The Google Chromebooks will be the beginning of a fully integrated, STEM-driven classroom.
My scholars will use the Chromebooks to conduct research, record data, collaborate on student-led group assignments, as well as create presentations of their conclusions. Specifically, the Chromebooks will assist scholars in their upcoming maker-based project. This assignment will be an interdisciplinary project that combines 3D model and logo design, vector creation and knowledge of the Periodic Table (elements, compounds and basic chemistry).
The other items in my project (binders, composition notebooks, sheet protectors and pencils) will assist scholars in becoming more efficient and organized in the Science classroom. Instead of valuable classroom instruction time being spent on finding and distributing supplies, my dream is for students to have access to a fully stocked classroom. In this classroom, they are focused and free to be creative while critically thinking through their own questions about the world around them.
Something as simple as access to supplies and technology will truly change how my students view education and the opportunities available to them. Most of my students do not have access to simple technology in their homes, so--at the very least--they should be able to come to their place of education and reap the benefits of an ever-growing field of technology.
