Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Language Arts teacher at Middle School 88 in Brooklyn, New York. The population of my school and class is very diverse. However, over 90% of my school's population receives free lunch, which is a strong indicator that the overwhelming majority of students come from lower-level income households.
In my two Language Arts classes, I have a total of 61 students. All too often, a student would ask to read a book from my classroom library which I do not have. Many of the "high interest" books which my students look forward to reading are not included by the Board of Education in the standard classroom library. These high interest books range from titles by Jacqueline Woodson to Lemony Snicket to the "Cirque du Freak" series by Darren Shan.
I am hoping to receive enough funding to take my 61 students on a trip to the nearby Barnes & Noble where they will all be allowed to purchase a book of their own choosing. I will strongly encourage them to purchase a book that I do not have in my classroom library. My students will use these books in my class as part of many ongoing reading and writing activities and assignments. When they complete the book and their assignments, instead of returning the book to my classroom library as they usually do, they will be able to take home their chosen books to add to, or be the first, of their personal home library.
