My Students

Our elementary school library serves approximately 400 students. The student population is highly inquisitive, energetic, and motivated to direct their own inquiry-based learning through exploration of library resources. Ours is a neighborhood school that began serving the students and families in 1953. Our school has an incredible group of students from a richly diverse range of backgrounds. Unfortunately, high poverty is part of the daily experience for most of these young learners.

Our wonderful students deserve to have every advantage of access to new books in which they can see them selves and look into other perspectives through books that feature characters different from them.

This year we are focusing on closing the achievement gap and creating a school full of confident, successful students. I am helping with access to education through technology help for students and families.

My Project

Distance learning is difficult. Not only are students learning in an unfamiliar way, they are missing out on the social and emotional connections that in person learning provides. So, why choose to read one book as a school?

To build a sense of community and togetherness during this time apart, our school wants to do a whole school reading of one book.

Each classroom from kindergarten to 5th grade would read Wild Robot by Peter Brown. In the primary grades this would be accomplished as a read aloud. Read alouds help students learn to listen, build bigger vocabularies, learn about text and story structure, and build a culture of learning. In the intermediate grades, students would independently read the text in concert with support in analysis from their teacher. When we return to in person learning, the students will all have this shared experience. It will be a common talking point where all students can relate to each other's reading experience as well as a connection to the adults in the building. Help us build community even when we can't be together!
