I teach in a tough environment where safety and security is a real issue. I have some fantastic students really do run the gamut from moderate to severe special needs to gifted/talented students who are already pursuing college level materials.
I have been intensely developing a classroom library, slowly replacing old, worn out and just really boring books we have inherited throughout the years. The library has been growing due to the wonderful generosity of the kind donors here at DonorsChoose. I am requesting 12 different books that speak to the students themselves.
I have learned that not everything has to be obvious about "the lesson". I want to provide more books that are a little more subtle about what the message is that it is getting across. Many of these books are simply interesting and the students will seek them out. A few of these are quite serious and will work for the advanced students working on more long term assignments and can handle the material.
Our focus on literacy has been possible only because of the generosity of people like you. Thank you so much for looking to benefit the students who are so in need. Because of such generous people, I have seen students who have never, ever read a book completely start and finish one in my classroom and, lo and behold, they enjoyed it! Seeing them grow and enjoy reading for the first time has kept me doing what I do.
