My students love coming to school every day and are always excited to learn. They love to learn, and love to have access to new opportunities. One of our favorite class pastimes is our daily read-aloud, where I share some of my favorite texts with the students. Our school has a very high population of students from low-income families and also a high ESL population, so engaging my kids and showing them all the opportunities available to them through education is one of my top priorities.
In our "family," as we call ourselves, we love learning new things and exploring the world around us through a variety of avenues.
One of the things we love most is reading. Popular titles in our classroom library are hot commodities! The children get so excited when they look through the book orders, and ask me all the time if we can order new books for our classroom for them to enjoy.
My Project
Have you ever picked up a book that made you feel as though you were part of something larger than yourself? Have you met characters that became your closest friends? Have you ever escaped reality through the joy of reading? These are the goals I have for my students, and these books can help me accomplish this goal.
Harry Potter, Wonder, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, and the other titles I have selected for my class are engaging, authentic, and inspirational texts with characters and plots that my students have already fallen in love with.
Since these texts are longer, it takes students a while to get through them. With only one copy available in the classroom and the library, it is difficult to accommodate everyone's desire to read!
Sadly, my kids don't have the home resources that many other students have to be able to purchase these books on their own. Often times, books they read or borrow from our classroom are the only texts they have access to outside of school. In order to continue fostering a love of reading, I would like to make these popular titles available to more of my students, this year and for many years to come.
