This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students in my classroom are typical 21st century students who gain the most knowledge and understanding from hands-on STEM activities. I want my students to leave knowing more than just spreadsheets, word documents, and clicking a mouse. I want them to be creators and inventors of the future.
We have experimented with Makey Makey, Squishy Circuits, MinecraftEdu, Ev3 Robotics, Ozobots, Scratch, Code, Raspberry Pi, 3Doodlers, and Stop Motion Video Creation.
For many of the students, school is the only place they have access to computers and the Internet and can learn about computer programming.
My Project
In groups of 2-4 students, my students will write original, re-imagined fairy tales based on classics like Cinderella, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, The Three Little Pigs, etc. Before beginning the project, the groups will read several versions of their chosen tale to retell. Then, the students will brainstorm, storyboard, write, and illustrate an original story. They will publish their story using the Book Creator iPad app.
As part of the project, students will use graph paper and Bloxels to create an adventure game which complements their re-imagined fairy tale.
Bloxels are an easy to use interactive video game design tool which will allow the students the ability to use their creativity to design their own characters and game story progression. Their final projects will be presented to the class for story feedback and video game testing. Both their book and game can be uploaded for more classrooms to enjoy once the final project is complete.
