Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Sometimes, students only hear stories at school. Parents oftentimes cannot find the time to read to their children because they may be inundated with work and household chores. They may also feel that reading to their children takes a great deal of effort in keeping them engaged with the stories.
We are in a public school located in Southern California.
Our school's pre-k program consists of two classes with 18 students in each class. All 36 of my students are of various cultural backgrounds and I find that reading books that represent their culture is important in keeping them engaged. This makes them feel proud of their heritage and gives them a sense of belonging.
My pre-k students are very energetic and eager to learn. Listening to story-time on the rug is one of their favorite activities in school. Reading to small children with minimal attention span requires a lot of energy and animation. I love to see their faces light up and when they express emotions while I read stories of different genres.
My Project
A read-aloud workshop from Ready, Set, Read! will be greatly beneficial for both the parents and their children. Parents will gain knowledge and ideas in sharing stories to their children at home, which will foster their children's love of reading. Who else will give the children more motivation in reading than their own parents?
Literacy development for children starts and continues at home.
The partnership between parents and teachers is crucial in making the children's future education a success. This workshop will serve as a wonderful jump start in making sure that this is accomplished!
