“You’ll miss the best things of you keep your eyes shut!” Whether the words of Dr. Seuss or any of our favorite authors, my classroom at Bellewood School on the Centerstone Campus (formerly Uspiritus) runs on books. Unfortunately, an air conditioning/mold problem ruined my entire class library of book sets for my room. I had been accumulating these stories for 11 years. My students will be heartbroken to hear many of their favorite titles are gone. These are students who have a variety of learning needs. Nearly all are in the State’s Custody and most are survivors of trauma. Though they be little, they are resilient! Our school, part of Centerstone’s residential psychiatric program, is often the first place these students are successful in a classroom community.
My Project
Our students love to read as a class. From our most struggling reader to our most advanced students - book sets build our community through shared storytelling, hearty debate, and the development of social skills through our “scavenger hunt” lessons we do in teams with all the texts. These books inspire journal entries and art projects. They improve educational outcomes for all learners and are the cornerstone of my classroom. All the sets were ruined through mold/water damage this summer. Please help us begin to rebuild this important part of our classroom community.
I’m requesting 6 sets to start the rebuilding process.
In total, we lost 24 titles due to mold. We would be incredibly grateful if you could help up start our next chapter. Thank you!
