Once Upon A Time Fairy Tales Needed

My Students

I am a pre-k teacher in Brooklyn. My students love to be read to every day. I am trying to encourage my students to gain the confidence to "read" on their own. To build their confidence, I want to provide as many emergent storybooks in the classroom as possible.

The majority of my students come from working families.

Sometimes they do not even see their families very often because they are trying to provide the best that they can for their children. Often they see their child care providers more often than their parents. When my students come into my classroom, my assistant and I try to make it as welcoming as possible. We start by introducing all the wonders that books have to offer. For some of my students, this is the first time people are taking the time to read to them and pay attention to what they want.

My Project

I would love for my students to make more of a connection to the stories that they read, either by remembering the sequences of events in the story or by re-creating the story as they are reading it with physical materials. Another way that I would love for my students to make a connection to the story they are reading or hearing in the classroom is to have books about fairy tales. Fairy tales are a great way to connect stories that their parents have read to them or seen the Disney version. I want my students to connect the story to the written print. The versions of the fairy tales that have been chosen vary in its content. Some are more traditional, some have variations on the ending and others come from other countries. Having my students exposed to fairy tale versions from other countries will help them to connect with other cultures and hopefully with their past as well.

My students live in one of the biggest cities in the world, it is only right that they be exposed to all the wonders that these cultures share with us.

This includes the fairy tales that come from these different cultures. My students will be exposed to different fairy tales and their versions. They will be able to make comparisons to each story and make connections to what they already know. I hope that they will be open to new versions and embrace these versions.
