it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Today a reader, tomorrow a leader..." When children learn to read, we set them free. First grade is a MAGICAL year. I have the honor of guiding my curious readers through a wild year of a academic rigor and reading growth. My students love to see the world open up around them with each new story. In every book there is a new adventure or treasure to be found.
My students have little bodies, big hearts and curious minds.
Our school is in the heart of Richmond, California in a high crime, low income neighborhood. Our students face adversities before they even step a foot into the classroom but still come to school ready to tackle a new set of academic challenges. I believe that every student deserves access to the resources they need to be successful in life.
My Project
There are more than 800 million people around the world that cannot read. There are many families without books and many more children that have not discovered all of the adventures that await them between the pages. That the magical world of reading is their ticket to EVERYWHERE.
The importance of books cannot be underestimated!
Our public libraries and book stores are overflowing with one of the most significant things of our time, BOOKS. Books should be everywhere, but most importantly, in the hands of our children! Unfortunately, some of our most deserving children in the most under-served schools are missing out on the rich literature that inspires readers. Over the years, I have spent a lot of time and money to build a classroom library that would invite my most timid reader to dive in but have fallen short.
We need your help! We cherish our morning Read-Alouds, but need support in building our Read-Aloud library. I want to expose my children to important books, books that create movements, books that spark conversations, books that win medals, books that make lists and books that create memories. All of the books that we are requesting are winners or finalists of the Children's Book Council. They will be read for our Morning Read Aloud and then added to our library for children to enjoy all year. Our list is BIG, but the impact that it will have on our young readers is immeasurable.
