Help me give my students novels to make connections to real life situations.

My Students
Hard working , adaptable, compassionate, diligent and reliable are just a few words used to describe my students. Hearing those adjectives, it is hard to imagine they attend a school where 96% of students are classified as low income. Given that fact, they don't let it hinder their education.
I teach at a neighborhood school where low-income does not equate to low-academics.
Because of their dedication to education, I want to be sure that as they grow, more adjectives can be added to the list to describe them. There is no limit to who or what they can be. Ultimately, when they are asked to describe themselves, the first word spoken should be inspirational.
My Project
Informational texts are the cornerstone to Social Studies learning, however, sometimes important information gets lost when students lose interest in the reading materials. I want my students to move beyond remembering facts and dates, to making connections with the text to real life situations they may relate to.
Student engagement with a topic increases when the text is relatable.
When teaching about real world situations, I want my students to have the opportunity to read text they can make connections with while analyzing.
Having a classroom set of novels will give my students the ability to read together, as well as take the books home to read independently.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
