Teaching children who come from various ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds is very rewarding, but challenging at the same time.
I teach kindergarten in an area where poverty is prevalent as well as many of the children display social and educational challenges. There are also many different ethnic backgrounds represented at our school. Our school works hard to provide the children with enriching opportunities to enhance their education-- both character and intellectual.
Many of my students need additional support with basic knowledge and skills such as color identification, letter naming, directionality, following 2 and 3 step directions, and identifying letter sounds. Since they are only 4, 5 or 6 years old, their attention span is limited and movement activities are important.
The classroom alphabet area rug that I am requesting will provide the children with many opportunities for various readiness skills. The rug has bright colors and sections with the letter in it. Each child will be able to have his own "space" during whole group time. There will be activities where listening skills will be enhanced, such as, "anyone on a red square stand up and jump 3 times." There will be direct instruction by naming the letters and identifying the picture with the letter sound. We will practice directions: left, right, forward, and backward. The carpet will also be used during small group time with activities such as sorting letters by matching them with the one on the carpet. We will also sort picture cards that way by matching them up with the initial or the final sound. All of these activities and more will include movement with a purpose because children at this young age especially learn more by doing!
Your donation will make learning a positive and interactive experience. It is especially important to get children at this young age hooked onto learning--having them want to come to school and engage in fun learning experiences.
