Nearly 600 students in grades 1-3, aged 5-9, attend our public primary school in southern Maine. The area is economically depressed, with many children depending on school breakfasts and lunches to supplement their diets. We are a designated Title I school.
Our school is moving towards individual and differentiated instruction.
Our population is very diverse. Student movement within the classroom to help focus their attention, thus increasing their learning, is crucial in today's classroom.
I have 20 smart, energetic second graders who deserve opportunities that will enrich their learning environment!
My Project
I want to bring my class alive by transforming my reading area. Our class will use the beanbags on a daily basis to encourage students to read. Students will have the freedom to move around and sit anywhere in the classroom. My students love working on the floor. Some sit against the wall, others lay down on the floor, all stretched out while they work on a project, use a computer, or read silently.
Learning will no longer be limited to desks in my classroom.
We need 6 beanbag chairs to improve the learning environment in our classroom. Active students will become active learners in a positive setting. Just like adult who love to read, student also enjoy cuddling up with a book in a cozy nook!
