My Students

I teach students in a high-poverty district. Many of the students come from homes in the poverty category. My classroom contains a majority of students who arrived well below level in reading. These students are served by interventionists and receive special services in reading and math. Some students receive services for speech as well. I also have ESOL students in the classroom from time to time. We are required to use computers for quarterly and standardized testing.

This year, instead of teaching this grade as I have for several years, I will be returning to a fifth grade classroom.

Although I have upper elementary texts from prior years in fifth grade, which I used for more advanced third grade readers, I do need to refurbish and increase my library.

With such a large number of students who struggle with reading and writing, it is important to help students develop writing skills by exposing them to examples in engaging text. The fiction and nonfiction books I have chosen for this project will be used as mentor texts to help students to become more detailed writers.

My Project

I am moving from 3rd to 5th grade next year. While I do have materials that will be suitable for fifth graders, most of my library is based on early and middle elementary reading levels. In order to better benefit my students, I will need to add higher level texts to the mix.

These resources will be used to strengthen student fluency, comprehension and writing skills to better prepare for middle school.

After over a year of change and uncertainty, students will be returning to the classroom. Fluency, comprehension and stamina in reading and writing will be a necessary focus in my classroom.
