My students are hardworking, young adults who are willing to take on an academic challenge by pursuing an AP class. My students are overwhelmingly sophomores, meaning that they take a college level course, with college level expectations at the young age of 15 years old.
They work incredibly hard at improving their reading, writing and critical thinking skills.
For many students, this is their first AP class or accelerated course. I want my students to leave my class with a love of history, but more importantly, the ability to critically analyze sources and make informed decisions. My course stresses critical thinking and writing and while it is challenging for many students, in the end, they feel a sense of accomplishment for completing the course and a majority of them will also earn scores high enough to qualify them for college credit on the AP test. These students are driven, innovative, and hardworking. They are our future leaders and the future is in good hands.
My Project
I am sure many of you remember the computer game Oregon Trail. It was always a good day when the teacher would take you to the computer lab and those green graphics would come up and you hit the trail West, until you died of a snake bite or dysentery.
The Oregon Trail card game allows students to work together to try to make it west to Oregon from Independence, MO and the Oregon Trail Hunt For Food Card game has the students working together to obtain 500 lbs of food.
These games will enhance my students problem solving skills and communication skills as my students learn about the hardships faced as settlers headed west on the Oregon Trail.
