My students need 2 tablets with keyboard cases and protection plans in the classroom to research, learn typing skills, and use apps to enhance learning.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
A typical day in my classroom is one with 30 fourth graders that are inquisitive and eager to learn. We start by eating breakfast in the class. While we eat, we discuss various themes, events and historical people from our literature circle.
My fourth graders are eager to learn.
They are enthusiastic and very inquisitive learners. They are a great group of kids who have been together since Kindergarten, so they know each other very well. Our school is a Title 1 school located in a lower socioeconomic area. It is two schools on one campus. My classroom belongs to the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Magnet Center. We have a computer lab, but unfortunately it only has 15 computers and we only have one slot per week to access them. With a class of 30 students, it is difficult to provide equal access to the computer lab. One week- 15 students use the computer lab. The other 15 students wait for the following week to access computers. This is a big problem when working on research projects. You always have one group who finishes a week earlier and the other is one week late. Even though we are a STEM magnet, my classroom is ill equipped with technology. I have two computers but only one has Internet.
My Project
Having two Surface tablets in my classroom, will motivate my students to get their research complete. My students will be able to research answers that they have from our readings. They will be able to work in either small groups, or independently, and finish any research projects I have assigned. I have several research topics that we work on during the school year. My students will not only acquire academic knowledge, they will also learn Microsoft Office such Word, Excel and PowerPoint (21st century technological skills). In addition to using the Surface for research, they can also be used to play with the different apps that will enhance learning. Because the Surface is small and lightweight, it can be moved around the room. There are three new projects this year. First, students will be researching an engineering project, that they will be responsible for completing. The second project is to work on a class newspaper. The last project is to have students make a digital yearbook.
Donations will improve my classroom because students will be able to have the necessary tools to fulfill the projects I have planned for them.
My students will be more motivated to finish their tasks because now they will be able to use technology and they tend to see technology as fun. They will be able to answer their own questions about a specific topic/theme. My students will acquire the necessary 21st technology skills that will prepare them for college and essentially the real world!
