On the Scene with Simple Machines

Help me give my students simple machines to extend their play and explore their ideas. They enjoy building and are curious about how ramps, levers, and pulleys are used.

My Students

Each morning we will begin our day with our class pledge: "I believe in myself and my ability to do my best. I am intelligent. I am capable of greatness. I can learn. I will learn. I must learn today. I am too smart to waste today."

My students are precocious and imaginative Pre-Kindergarteners who love to explore, draw, and recreate the world around them.

My school is a gifted school on Chicago's South Side that provides an advanced and enriched program for students in Grades K-8. Our goal is to continue to achieve academic excellence by teaching the whole child, using data to drive instruction and achievement, providing personalized and differentiated instruction, and partnering with parents and various community organizations.

My Project

My students use simple machines as they plan, play and create throughout the day. I noticed they enjoy playing on the slide at the playground, using blocks as ramps for their race cars, as well as staplers to make books. During story time, they enjoy acting out stories such as Henny Penny, The 3 Little Pigs, & The Gingerbread Man.

These simple machine kits will aid in student abilities to identify various simple machines, explain their uses, and apply their knowledge to help their favorite characters escape a sly fox!
