As the flood waters rose on Aug. 12 up to 90% of the citizens in our small community and parish in south Louisiana lost their homes, automobiles, and businesses. Our school along with 14 other schools were damaged by flood water. I am junior high school art teacher to approximately 256 students. The majority of the student body comes from low-income homes. Each day my 6th - 8th grade students face challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite these challenges they come to school eager to learn and ready to get creative.
The art room is not your typical classroom...there are no desks, it can be noisy with the music playing, students talking and laughing all while they are creating art. It is a place where the playing field is leveled. Everyone learning at their own pace by manipulating a variety of materials and exploring artistic techniques. Yet despite the craziness, it's a place were students learn to express themselves in positive, appropriate and supportive ways. It is a safe haven that provides a break from the rigors of academics while they learn life skills they use daily now and in their future.
My students are creative, fun loving and eager to explore new techniques giving them a voice through art.
In order to do this we must have art supplies.... markers, paints, drawing paper and pencils, erasers, rulers and much more. Students will use technology to locate visual inspiration on laptops, they will create paper mache and wire sculptures, paint watercolor pictures, sculpt with clay, draw realistic images but most importantly they will learn the important role art plays in their daily lives.
