This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Learning to identify, know the value of and count money is an important lesson that all children must possess if we want them to be financially literate. If we want our children to grow up to be responsible and knowledgeable about finances we need to build a strong foundation on money.

I am a teacher in a school that services students who come from low income working class families that live in or close to one of Los Angeles' low income housing complexes.

My students are some of the most creative 1st graders you can ever meet. They are smart enthusiastic students who enjoy learning.

My Project

In order for my students to understand how to identify money by name, attributes and value, they need a variety of materials. First they need coin manipulatives and magnets so that they can manipulate and have a hands-on experience with money. Another strategy that I would like to use so that they comprehend the topic of money is the use of flash cards. The ink that I am requesting will be used to make flash cards with coins so that my students have opportunities to learn all the attributes that accompany each coin and bill. I will also use the laminating machine and pouches to laminate the cards in order to make them sturdy and assure that they last for my current and future students. When my students comprehend the value of coins and money they will have an opportunity to play the allowance game. This game will reinforce the concept of knowing how to count money and will also teach them the value of money and how to be financially responsible.

Thank you for taking the time to read this project proposal.

If you decide to donate you will be helping my students become financially literate by bringing materials that will help teach them the value of coins, and identify and know how to count and appreciate money. The materials that I am requesting will help my current students as well as future students get on the road of financial responsibility. Thank you!
