Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In history my students get to learn the wonderful story of the evolution of humanity. However, we don't get to learn about the discoveries that led to our current knowledge of evolution. I would like to create a multidisciplinary novel unit that would teach both the facts of evolution and the humanity behind its discovery.
My students are eager, bright, and hardworking.
They speak many languages from Spanish to Tagalog, Chinese to Samoan. Some students enter my class fully prepared for the rigor of middle school, while other students come far behind. All my students benefit from repeated and frequent exposure to engaging material. Whether it is written, spoken, or read, students learn something every time they sit down with a text. What they are is curious and ready to engage with the world!
My Project
I am requesting the Excellence in Young Reading Young Adult Nonfiction Winner, "Charles and Emma' by Deborah Heiligman. We already have a few copies of the book, so my request would complete a class set, allowing us to read and explore it together. This book explores the lives of Charles and his wife Emma through their personal letters, professional writings, and the remembrances of friends and families. Although thoroughly about the discovery of the theory of evolution, the book humanizes the science. Written at a kid friendly level it is the perfect introduction to the father of biological science.
I am also requesting various other nonfiction books about evolution. These will be used by students to prepare research projects in history and science. They will also be available throughout the year for students that are curious to read more.
Students love a good book.
All the better when that book can teach important concepts. Just as the periodic table of the elements is the key concept in chemistry, evolution is the cornerstone of biology. Will you please join me by bringing Darwin into my students' hands?
