On the Menu: Lunch & LIT Book Club Titles

My Students

Our school's mission is to build a community of learners that meets the individual needs and passions of the students we serve.

We have over 1100 enthusiastic learners at our school who are diverse in many ways.

We have students from all different backgrounds and cultures. We have students with many different passions and interests, from STEM areas to theater and music. We have students who are learning English as a second language, and those who are learning foreign languages. In fact, our ESL population has doubled in the last year and continues to grow. Our school has programs for life skills students and social skills programs for students with autism. About 27 percent of our students are economically disadvantaged. Forty-four percent of our population is considered "at-risk," but these labels do not stop our students.

My Project

Our library has a Lunch & LIT Book Club for students. We read a book of the month and then join together for lunch to discuss the book. We have even continued through the pandemic virtually by meeting through Zoom. These are dedicated students! Recently, our Lunch & LIT club became an official chapter of the #ProjectLIT Book Club Community. #ProjectLIT is a grassroots literacy movement to empowering readers and spreading diverse literature.

Students need books to be mirrors to see themselves, but also windows so that they can experience other cultures.

Diversity in our Book Club selections is a priority to me. I want the characters in our books to represent our student population.

"Every student deserves to see themselves in the books they read. Books have the power to encourage students while at the same time enlighten other readers of the truths about lives they don’t live. And hopefully, that enlightenment will spur compassion, understanding, and change," (On Our Minds, Scholastic, Inc.).
