My Students
I have a class of 22 diverse students that come from many different and unique backgrounds. Our schools provides free and reduced lunch to 100% of the students, and we are an area of high need. My classroom represents many different cultures, with 7 students being English Language Learners. Despite our differences in race, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, and others, we work together each day to grow as much as possible. We spend a lot of time together in our classroom, and in many ways it is our 'home.' I will be looping with these students next year, moving with them from 4th grade to 5th grade.
As they continue to become stronger readers and deeper thinkers, I want to help them develop a lifelong love for reading.
There are so many great books out there, but we have limited book sets that are of interest to the kids. Providing books that align with the individual interests of my students and speak to them on a personal level is critical.
My Project
These books will give my students the chance to see themselves represented in quality literature. It is important that a diverse group of students has access to a diverse set of books to read, and these books fill that need. Learning to analyze characters, determine the author's purpose, and summarize a text are all important skills for students to develop, but reading also helps students grow as individuals.
By providing literature that supports both academic and social/emotional needs, a single book can make a long lasting impact on a child's life.
These books are ordered in sets of 5, allowing students to participate in literature circles with their peers. These circles are a place for them to discuss literary elements and the social issues that are approached in the books. The hope is to continue supporting the growth of the student as a whole, not just a reader.
