This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students live in a high poverty area. The vast majority of my students are minority students with extremely diverse backgrounds due to the large number of transient students we have. We are a Title I school. Most students cannot afford the basic supplies needed for class.
Most of my students are the first ones in their family to aspire to go to college, which not only affects the student's life but their family's life as well.
Many of my students struggle to connect what they learn in the classroom to real-world events going on around them. I want to use resources to not only help my students build tolerance and acceptance but to also build a small community within our school.
My Project
I am helping our track and field students by requesting the starting blocks they need. Their current equipment is outdated and unsafe. We have elite athletes every year in track and field and in order for our students to compete and be successful on such a high level, they need to practice at that same level. These starting blocks will not only give them the great practice they need, it will also provide our team with a lot safer equipment. The budget for track and field is very small but our athletes compete in so many different events. Each of these events requires very specific equipment to ensure they are successful!
