My school is located in a low income part of town. Over half the students are bus riders and are unable to participate in after school activities due to transportation. According to SC Report Card, 81% of the students in our school live in poverty.
Our school represents a variety of cultures, expectations, and families that seek to improve their child's future through experiences and education.
We have a diverse population that mirrors the population variety from our great nation. This is also reflected in the income diversity from family to family. But with this said, every family wants to see their child succeed and supports our effort in that endeavor.
My Project
In a world of electronics and kids spending most of their time inside, I would like to offer my students the opportunity to be exposed to the outdoor sport of archery. In combination with the Department of Natural Resources, I would like to use the Genesis Compound Bow in my class to allow students to learn and practice focus, patience, and routine.
The core content of archery is safety, technique, mental concentration, and self-improvement.
Archery puts all students on an equal footing and allows everyone to be successful. Students will learn to use these lessons in their own lives.
With so many distraction around them every day, student need a time to just be still and enjoy the calmness of the moment. Archery is one of the few sports available to our students that provides this atmosphere. There is no one screaming and yelling at them from the sidelines. No one is breaking their concentration during their performance. Students are able to focus and make corrections at a slower pace, which allows them the time to reflect and make better informed decisions with the guidance of positive reinforcement from their coach. This is something that is desperately needed in our world of instant feedback that is often not positive.
