On Stage: Using Readers' Theater to Improve Reading Fluency

My Students

All the world is a stage and my students love to be on stage. Readers' Theater is an engaging way for all students to work on their reading fluency, but my struggling readers especially benefit!

We are a public, second grade through sixth grade, Title 1 school in Northwestern Minnesota.

Over half of my students qualify for free and reduced lunch and 33% percent of my students are minorities. Over half of my class this year are reading below grade level. Many of my students do not have books to read at home, but take books from our classroom library home each night. These kids are excited to learn to read better and work so hard!

My Project

Readers' Theater has provided an engaging way for my students to develop reading fluency. The benefits are especially high for my struggling readers. We have many readers' theater materials and the kids are continuously practicing and performing these plays for their classmates, as well as for other classrooms. How would a camcorder change the lives of my students? Currently they are only hearing reflections and critiques regarding their fluency from their classmates and myself. If they were able to record and then view their performances I could help them critique themselves. I want them to hear their voices. Are they expressive? Does their reading sound like conversation? What do they need to work on? In order for anyone to grow, I believe he or she must reflect on his or her progress. The reflection piece is missing at this point. A donation of the camcorder would afford the kids the opportunity to reflect and grow.

This project would enhance an already established classroom activity, by allowing the students to use their critical thinking while reflecting on their performances.

Also, although the camcorder would primarily be used for Readers' Theater, my students could use it for so many other projects and lessons. Please consider our proposal.
