We are an all-girl school focusing on STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering, and math). My vision is for us to transform into a STEAM school, adding fine arts as a crucial element to our students' studies. Art has proven to help students become more innovative and better critical thinkers.
The students that enter my art room are young women from all over the city, with various backgrounds.
The majority of the girls are black and Hispanic, and come from economically disadvantaged homes. Many of them might be the first from their family to graduate high school and attend college. Our school acknowledges the struggles these children meet and help prepare them to be career- and college-ready by offering a myriad of Advanced Placement courses, college field trips, and partnerships with businesses to provide externships. The students have proven to be resilient, eager to learn, and ready to prove that no matter where they came from, no matter what boundaries exist for women, they will succeed.
My Project
Our school is a 1:1 school, meaning every student has a laptop. I incorporate a lot of digital art in my lessons where the students have the opportunity to create art using different websites and programs. The lack of color printers at our school has been a disadvantage when displaying student-created digital artwork. By having a dedicated color printer in the art room, the students will be able to see their work on the walls of our school for all to see, in color, as it was meant to be seen.
In addition, the scanner feature of the multifunction printer will be invaluable in digitally archiving student work as we create online portfolios. Portfolios help students track their progress as well as refine their work. A scanner in the classroom will also allow for more possibilities in the creation of their digital artwork.
By having a multi-format card USB card reader, we will be able to transfer photos and videos from cameras for digital art with ease.
By having a multifunction printer in the art room, the benefit is two-fold: Students will have a new tool with which to create art and they will have the opportunity to display and share their art with their classroom and the entire school.
When students see their ideas come to life, they are eager to learn more, to create more. I hope we will be able to offer more complete technologically-equipped classroom for my students this year.
