I teach Life P.E. at a rural, public high school just outside a college town. My students are your typical, teenage females who experience life differently through social, emotional, academic and health issues. Despite the different backgrounds that each one comes from, they love to be engaged, enjoy hands-on lessons, and rise to challenges they may face. I am able to provide these type of lessons through exercising and physical fitness activities. They look forward to trying new things and feel safe to take chances physically when they may feel like they are not very good at exercising and physical fitness activities.
It amazes me to see so many young ladies willing to be physically active and it gives me hope that they will continue to be this motivated as they get older and are out of high school.
Many of my students do not have access to a gym or exercise equipment at home or in the community.
My Project
The use of an elliptical machine will be a daily activity in my Life P.E. class. I plan to have the students use the elliptical machine by having them rotate to it in small groups throughout the class period. The elliptical machine allows me to provide an additional way for students to exercise, in addition to the activities/sports, weightlifting, and aerobic exercise that we do in class. We have been limited as to what we are able to do because we share one gym with the other physical education class. By using an elliptical machine, students will be able to exercise at school in a way they have never been able to do before.

Students will be able focus on their health in a new exciting way. I incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, and learning opportunities for my students to gain experiences of different ways to exercise and provide ideas and a foundation that they may use on a regular basis at school and outside of school. If this project is funded along with the project for a stationary bike, they will greatly compliment each other and the students will have an unbelievable opportunity to improve their health daily while they are at school.
