This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In our program, students learn roommate skills, personal care, cleaning, cooking, vocational training and banking. The apartment serves as an actual representation of independent living and they are involved in every aspect of it. The end goal for each student is to be able to live on their own.
We are a Community Transition Program (CTP) for Special Ed young adult students ranging in age from 18-22.
Some students have autism, down syndrome, visual and physical impairments as well as learning disabilities. We are a part of the Elk Grove Unified School District. Our classroom is an actual apartment in our community.
My Project
As a part of teaching, the students are encouraged to frequently research elements to help them be as independent as possible. Sometimes this might be looking up recipes to cook or finding out bus routes so that they can access public transportation possibilities. The iPad mini will help us give them technological access to all the world wide web has to offer! We can have them find job opportunities, look up movie times, even google solutions to cleaning the unexpected stain in their shirt!
Susan B.
Anthony said, "Independence is Happiness". This is exactly our end goal for these young adults. They are taught everything to make them good contributing citizens in their community. The iPads will assist them in their road to independent living and give them the tools to navigate their way through life.
