My Students
What do all LES Tigers have in common? They love coming to music class! Our music room is a place where students can express themselves, be creative, and explore the arts. It is the only place where some of our students consider themselves to be successful.
Our school is a large elementary school in the beautiful southeastern Kentucky mountains.
We serve 600 students including preschool and K-5. Our student body is very diverse with nearly 78% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch. A large number of our students benefit from "The Backpack Club," which is a weekend feeding program.
Although we have a majority of students who come from a low economic background, our students always come to school eager to learn and excited to experience new opportunities.
My Project
Our school has acquired a classroom set of 5 gallon buckets and I have purchased a wonderful bucket drumming curriculum for my students. The only problem is that we don't have sticks to play them with!
Imagine walking into the music room to see students repurposing a paint bucket into a musical instrument.
We are only thirty pairs of drum sticks away from making this a reality! Students have already been playing on buckets using rhythm sticks which are causing wear and tear on the sticks that aren't really designed for drumming. We are asking for the appropriate drumming tools so we can preserve our rhythm sticks for other uses.
Please help us meet our goal and get the drumsticks we need!
Nearly all students from low‑income households
