My Project

First graders have a unique sense of wonder about everything around them and an enthusiastic desire to learn and grow. My students face challenges daily and overcome them with a sense of strength, curiosity, and pride under the mantra "practice makes progress."

With the growing percentage of nonproficient readers entering testing grades, there is a greater challenge placed on primary teachers to ensure that students are meeting the phonological awareness milestones to make them proficient readers.

My students have the desire to learn about being successful and do so in a fun and engaging way. These materials will make a difference in their learning by allowing phonics instruction to be hands-on with the use of manipulatives and tools that facilitate and enforce the idea that sounds "stick" together to form words, using the magnet wands and chips. The white board will allow for collaborative whole-group time that is easier than traveling the classroom with a hefty workbook and also encourages making mistakes because it is easier to erase on the white board than on paper, using the felt squares as erasers and the storage basket to stay organized. The magnetic letters are also a hands-on way to encode words by putting a letter to the sound and being able to distinguish consonants from vowels to encourage the understanding of syllable division and syllable types and how they impact the sounds that letters make in multisyllabic words.
