I am the proud teacher of one section of 30 AP Physics students and two sections totaling 70 Honors Physics students at a large urban high school. Our school is college focused and challenges the students daily with a rigorous curriculum. Our students take twice as much science as typical high school students, and have specialty courses which focus on applications in medicine. They stay an extra hour a day and participate in an extended school year which starts early in August and doesn't end until July. They are motivated scholars who are determined to go to good colleges and achieve great heights in life.
Like most urban schools, we face the challenge of cut budgets and limited supplies. Especially with the addition of AP Physics this year, having quality laboratory equipment is essential to student learning and making my courses equivalent to the high expectations of a college course. I take the structuring of my curriculum very seriously and believe strongly that labs are fundamental in understanding the amazing world of physics.
One unit which is lacking the proper equipment is the topic of conservation of energy. This unit acts as a foundation for the entire year of physics and is also a core concept in every field of science from biology to chemistry and beyond. Having the roller coaster apparatus is a fascinating way for the students to explore the relationship between different types of energy. They will be able to take precise data and analyze that data by making graphs. This would become an integral lab for the students' understanding.
Perhaps you recall from your own experience in science classes, but labs help to make the teacher and textbook make sense to students. Without equipment I feel like I'm teaching with one arm tied behind my back. Your donation would provide hours of laboratory time for the class of 2011 and for every class of students thereafter.
