Omnikin and You... Who Knew that Cooperation Was So Much Fun!

My students need an Omnikin ball to introduce cooperative play while in PE.

My Students

The challenges facing my students is that they are used to playing traditional sports such as basketball and have virtually no knowledge of non-traditional sports. I want to expand their knowledge of cooperative and team sports so that they will have a more well-rounded knowledge of what PE is about

The students at my school are living in high poverty, some are homeless but they do not come to school as if they accept that as their fate.

They still show up to school with a smile on their face ready to work, even if their home life is very hectic. These students are some of the most talented, charismatic, loving, mature, funny, hard working and empathetic students I have had the pleasure to be around. My students attend a school that has been re-done from the inside to go from drab to fab. The mascot on the gym floor was scratched off, the hallways were gray and it did not look like a place where kids could learn. Now, it is brighter, more kid-friendly with student-centered work on the walls and a bright new gymnasium. Because of the work done to the entire building, our students have taken more pride in themselves.

My Project

Imagine a game in PE where no students are sitting down, a student yells OMNIKIN YELLOW! and 5 or 6 students go running to catch a 40' ball before it touches the ground. When you look up, a student is lying on the ground and another has her head holding onto the ball. Sounds fun right?! IT IS! Omnikin is a cooperative strategy game that provides up to 4 teams of students playing time simultaneously, with no students sitting out, which minimizes behavioral issues while maximizing aerobic activity. They will expand upon their already vast knowledge of cooperative sports to take their knowledge deeper, to a level that lets the class run itself because the students know rules, and each other.

I want to give my students the same opportunities that students in suburban elementary schools are getting: access to cooperative games that tap into their affective and cognitive domains with as much regularity as their psychomotor domain.

It will allow my students to think on a higher level according to Bloom's and will just be one more way my students are able to work more cooperatively with their peers which will translate to how cooperatively they work with others outside of school.
