My students need the Lego Mindstorm Ev3 Core Set, kits, and Idea and Discovery Books to explore introductory robotics projects. The spider and dragster kit to ensure that special-needs students have added support.

My Students
We are an inner-city classroom in a large, urban district in Ohio. I teach both math and science. My class is an eclectic mix of students who are bilingual, over-age, accelerated, regular ed. and/or with special needs. Their academic abilities are as diverse as their personalities.
Moving from fourth grade to fifth together creates the challenge of making fifth grade feel "different" from fourth grade and not just a repeat of last year.
I want them to be more responsible for their own learning and more creative in their projects in fifth grade. Having the opportunity to apply the coding they learned in 4th grade with robotics in 5th grade would be epic!
My Project
We learned in 4th grade that we use algorithms constantly. This project will help make some of those connections real to my students. The Lego Robotics kit will allow my students to further explore STEM topics which will hopefully point them towards STEM careers.
When you open up STEM options to students who haven't had these opportunities, the results can be life-changing.
This project gives them added incentive and direction to move away from playing video games and towards coding. I hope it will help them to decide on a high school with a STEM focus and prepare them for future robotics competitions.
