OMG Robotics, Part 2! #AllinCLE

My students need to add expansion packs and sensors so that everyone in class can have enough materials to build their robotic creations and no one has to wait.

My Students

We are an inner-city classroom in a large, urban district in Ohio. I teach both math and science. My class is an eclectic mix of students who are bilingual, over-age, accelerated, regular ed. and/or with special needs. Their academic abilities are as diverse as their personalities.

Moving from fourth grade to fifth together creates the challenge of making fifth grade feel "different" from fourth grade and not just a repeat of last year.

I want them to be more responsible for their own learning and more creative in their projects in fifth grade. Having the opportunity to apply the coding they learned in 4th grade with robotics in 5th grade would be epic!

My Project

We are so grateful to get a class start-up pack for Lego Robotics. Unfortunately, having eight kids share a small set of supplies just stinks! In order to fully immerse them in problem solving and design, they need to have more materials. They need to have small groups all working at once so they can bounce ideas between groups and learn from each other.

Real learning happens when all hands are in and students can compare multiple solutions as they work through a problem or design.

Having enough materials will mend hurt feelings and behavior issues from students who feel left out because they have to wait so long for some hands-on time with the Lego components.
