The students in my Speech and Language Day Class at Willie Brown Jr. College Preparatory Academy, participate in a weekly, onsite, public health intervention program from the Omega Boy's Club.
The Omega program, designed specifically for at risk elementary, middle school and high school students, promotes self esteem building and positive interactions between students (and student groups). The Omega Scholar's Too Good for Violence Program provides life skills training for Willie Brown Jr. College Preparatory Academy students living in the Bayview Hunter's Pointe Community. The weekly lessons focus on making good choices, and choosing alternatives to violent behavior and violent language. It gives students a forum to talk and write about difficult subjects they experience or witness related to crime and violence. In addition, for the many students facing difficult home circumstances, the program's tenets provide students with hope for graduating from high school, attending college, and/ or finding a stable career. Students also receive weekly classroom visits from the Omega Boy's Club founder/executive director Dr. Joseph Marshall.
I am writing this grant proposal to request funding to continue the Omega program at our school. The funding will assist with the weekly expenses related to the classroom visits with Dr. Marshall. The funding will also provide teachers with an opportunity to receive classroom management consultations with Dr. Marshall. At the end of the school year, each class will participate in a culminating project. The project will require students to write an essay about the effects of the Omega Program Philosophy on their lives this school year. In lieu of the essay, students may opt to create a poster/mural/collage which displays their feelings of how the Omega Program changed their lives this year.
We are excited about the opportunity to offer these intervention activities and practices to our scholars at the Willie Brown, Jr. College Preparatory Academy.
