My students need math maniplulatives, props for assisting with retelling, letter blocks, letter tablets and letter objects to increase phonics and phonemic awareness skill.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
All 25 of my students come in each morning bursting at the seams with energy and excitement for the day. My students have not yet discovered the joy of reading and using their imaginations. This could be the year that magic happens and the year they fall in love with learning!
My school has a very unique population.
We currently have 97% of the students receiving free lunch and 54% of our students qualify for special education. My school has come a long way since I first started there, violence is down and parent engagement has begun to rise. We still struggle to find new and exciting ways to teach all of our students, but especially students with disabilities. My class is an Integrated Co-teaching class. We have 25 amazing students, 12 of them with special needs. Many of my students live in shelters or with extended family in small accommodations. When students come to my classroom it seems like an escape for them. They are free of any worries they may have had and are allowed to be kids again. It is my job to make sure for those six hours, these students are loved, cared for, and taught.
My Project
Since my students comes from families who struggle financially I think that the requested tablets will engage and excite them. Learning their letters and letter sounds through a tablet would amaze my students and then hopefully fuel their desire to continue learning. The letter tubs will then take the stuff they are learning on the tablet and allow them to apply it to real tangible things in the classroom.
All of the items I am requesting are really about teaching the kids how to enjoy reading and math. The story bags will teach them how to relate to characters, form opinions about stories and even dramatize the story. They will be given an opportunity to act out their favorite books and dress up as the charters.
The math manipulative will be used everyday. My class struggles a lot with counting. These resources take something that can be very frustrating to a child and make it exciting and fun.
Donations to this project will teach my students that learning can be enjoyable and there is always a way to learn, you just have to find it.
I hope that with these materials my students will be able to move from pre-emergent readers to level D readers by June. Donations would also show them that there are good people in the world who care enough about them to donate.
