My students live in an urban area in NY and most do not have access to technology at home or in the classroom on a regular basis. And while they may be challenging at times, they do manage to make me smile every day and I certainly learn from them as much as they learn from me!
It breaks my heart knowing that these bright and inquisitive students are lacking the technology that will better prepare them for the world we currently live in and the world of their future.
Due to various circumstances, most of my ELA students do not have access to technology either at home or even in the classroom. This puts them at an incredible disadvantage and creates a very uneven playing field when compared to their peers in more affluent areas. My students are bright, inquisitive and deserving of the best educational experience possible.
Kids are drawn to technology like the moth to the flame!!
Many of my students are reluctant to pick up a book, but are excited to read using programs like myON, and ReadWorks.com. Grammar and writing skills can be tedious tasks to a middle schooler, but websites like www.noredink.com make learning grammar fun. At the risk of sounding cliche, reading is fundamental to all aspects of education and having access to Chromebooks will increase their Lexile levels as well as foster a love of reading and writing.
