Help me give my students tools which are not hand made or over 15 years old. The angle clay cutting tool replaces beveling by hand and the wax resist keeps the glaze off the bottom of the pot.
I teach at a school where more that 50% of students are low-income and some are immigrants. I also serve special needs students.
I challenge all my students to strive for their personal best and they do an amazing job of setting the bar high for themselves.
With many budget cuts over the years, money for all these requested "extras" used in ceramics is simply not in my budget.
Let's face it....we all appreciate tools which make our jobs easier. Since a student's job is school, the same applies to them. I've done my best to supply them with tools by making carving tools from just bamboo and scoring tools and other carving tools out of bamboo and paper clips and they use them to make the best of the situation.
I regularly remind them of my limited budget and the need to take care of the tools we do have.
And they do.
Recently there were very generous people who enabled me to offer more than one project using underglaze. I have not been able to introduce those projects in the past due to the cost of underglaze. The kids were so excited about being the first of my classes who were able to slip trail with colors rather than slip made from red clay and used on white clay.
I know my students would greatly appreciate new tools. Getting new tools makes anyone feel special. We could all use a boost!
