Okay, So That's News But What Does It Really Mean?

My students need subscriptions to TIME for Kids and a class set of dictionaries so they can accurately look up the meaning of the words they see and hear in the news.

My Students

I have a transient student population. Over 50% of my class come and go during the course of the school year. I have a number of students who are homeless or live in shelters. Several of my students are also here in the United States for the first time, and English is not their first language. Many of my kids do not read at grade level. Writing is a struggle for them. They generally do not have access to technology or reading materials outside of school. All my students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch. Many of them are the children of deployed military personnel. effectively.

My sixth grade students think that they know EVERYTHING, but they are so wrong.

There is so much for them to learn. They attend an older, urban, public school that is coded as high poverty. They need accessible, current, accurate information. Our school is very culturally diverse.

My Project

My students are very social and talkative. Many of them are learning English and I encourage them to talk about social studies, the news and current events. Now, I want to take this to another level. I want them to get the facts before they discuss so I am asking for subscriptions to TIME For Kids, as well as dictionaries.

Dictionaries will encourage my students to learn new words and incorporate them into class discussions about current events.

Having access to their own copy of TIME for Kids will also increase their reading skills. My students will learn about text features, such as captions, charts, and bold text headings. They will have their own copy to refer to as we discuss the written text. Then they can take home the magazine hone to share with their family.
