This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Think back to your experience in high school...can you remember a time where you didn't understand something but the teacher just continued the lesson? How did you feel? Frustrated? Annoyed? Ready to learn more? The answer to that last question is probably "NO!"
My students are high school juniors and seniors at a college preparatory school in New York City.
We are a Title I school which means more than half of our students are on a free or reduced lunch schedule. My students are motivated, eager and ready to learn. They love participating in the daily activities planned for them and really respond to the inquiry based learning environment where they take ownership over their own learning. They respond well to tactile and auditory learning and love to move around the classroom while mastering and immediately applying their new knowledge.
My Project
Unfortunately, an inquiry based classroom involves many supplies which are expensive. With the many budget cuts, the school is unable to fund many of these projects. With your help, students will be able to use a camera in school and at home to capture their inquiry learning. Additionally, using the whiteboards, markers, and paper in the classroom will facilitate the ongoing formative assessment practices that already exist in our classroom. The whiteboards allow all students to respond to questions, work out problems, and let the teacher know immediately if they are stuck so they are able to receive immediate feedback. These materials will enhance the teaching and learning in the classroom and grant even more ownership over learning to the students.
This project is absolutely essential to continue running an inquiry based classroom where students are able to take ownership over their own learning, apply their knowledge immediately - making it relevant to their own lives - and be given immediate feedback from the teacher.
These practices will help students become more self-sufficient and better prepare them for success in college and beyond!
