Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our work is the presentation of our capabilities.~Edward Gibbon If this is the case, my students are capable of posters torn from huge rolls of paper, usually in dark colors that are hard to read, and markers that dry out before they finish writing their posters.

I teach in a public school in Colorado.

My building is a Title I school and very low income. The majority of my sixth grade students come from disadvantaged, single parent homes. Unfortunately, many of my students don't even live with their own parents, but rather with grandparents or foster homes. Eager to learn, but often without the resources at home, many of my students spend hours at school, outside of regular school hours in the labs or with dedicated teachers willing to come in early or stay late. With hormones racing and bodies changing, these soon to be young adults are struggling with the challenge of growing up, becoming more independent and learning who they are, all while trying to figure out what class to go to and how to open up that dang locker!

My Project

The use of visual aids, coupled with good public speaking skills, work hand-in-hand to create effective presentations. Instead, much emphasis is given to visual aids which are essential to all successful presentations. With the proper tools, my students will be able to create posters worthy of hanging in the halls. The prestigious honor of seeing your project presented for all to see often outweighs the hard work that students put into the poster. My students are stuck tearing "poster size" charts from huge rolls of usually dark paper, then attempting to use half dried out markers to create their visual presentations. Our marker bucket is filled with old markers recycled from locker clean outs and clearance sales. Each time we use them, many find a permanent home in the trash can, so we are now dwindling to a few colors; creativity and variety from one group to the next is nearly non-existent. We need chart paper and new markers.

As part of the Common Core standards, students are required to present research and findings.

Visual aids provide memory cues for students during their presentations and allow to produce a higher quality final product. If the visual aid looks like it came from the recycling bin, the presentation will probably mimic the visual aspect of the project.
