My students need comfortable chairs to sit in during guided reading. My students need book bins to store their books quickly and quietly. My students need ELA centers.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Perseverance is hanging on when others have let go!" Reading is our last subject of the day. I always tell the students it's one of my favorite times of day, to truly go somewhere magical with them! But of course with the magic comes the maintenance, the management of keeping 24 busy bodies focused
My students are hungry, literally and figuratively.
My third grade classroom is in a high poverty district. But you wouldn't know it from the smiles that make their way into my class each day. Students are literally stuffing their breakfasts in their happy cheeks, while attacking morning math the moment they step through the threshold. My kids come excited to learn; whether they are one of my newcomers from the Middle East, gifting me with flowers because they are so grateful to be here, or one of my students with PTSD who took an important step towards trust and wrote me a note to let me know she likes me so far. Each one of my students is a capable, excited learner even though they may have some obstacle that may be in front of them. The best thing we do for each other is give second chances and persevere. I see their desire and it is what pushes me every day to be better. I can't shut it off, even though I wish I could some days. My kids deserve it.
My Project
Reader's Workshop can be a transformational time when all the pieces are in place. You can truly feel the hum of students' brains at work if they are set up for success. To achieve success during that time, it is imperative to have smooth transitions. There are 24 students reading at their independent or instructional level trying to construct meaning and wonder, while at times, bumping into each other because we are so close.
The materials will be used to make the transition from desks to reading spots more fluid and to create more comfortable seating. I am lucky enough to receive some support during that time with my second language learners. Currently their book club meets behind my supply area in a cramped corner on the floor. They love the group and I even think they like how it feels cozy, but it still pains me a little to see them all on the floor with my worn reading rugs.
In short, these donations will be instantly noticed by anyone who passes by.
The bins will allow students the opportunity to take greater pride in their personal book selections. The chairs will allow students a comfortable place to receive instruction without having to borrow someone else's chair. The centers will give students the opportunity to fill a much needed vocabulary deficit. These donations will instantly enhance and improve each of my students' reading lives. Thank you!
