My Students

"Oh the Places You'll Go" is a book I have been reading to my students for Read Across America Day. After reading this book, I would like to be able to give my students some Dr. Seuss themed items such as pencils, erasers, bookmarks, and Dr. Seuss's first book, "The Cat in the Hat", or "The Lorax".

My 32 5th grade students live in a low income neighborhood in Southern California.

My students are mostly second language learners and need many visual supports while they are learning. We are a Title I school with almost 1000 students on campus each day. I have been teaching at this school for the last 15 years and all of those years have been with either 5th or 6th grade students.

My Project

Each year in March, there is a celebration of Dr. Seuss' birthday. We use Read Across America week to expose students to many of his books and do activities related to the stories we read. This year, I would like to surprise my students with a small goodie bag filled with erasers, pencils, pencil sharpeners and bookmarks all with a Dr. Seuss theme. I would also like to provide each student with a Dr. Seuss book to take home. Since many of the students I teach do not read on grade level, I have chosen books that are closer to their reading levels so they can feel successful while reading these stories. I want to give them success in reading so they will be motivated to continue to read.

Unless I buy the "extras" for my classroom, they are not provided to me.

Many years ago when I was in school, we had "room mothers" that would dream up fun activities around the holidays and provide snacks, goody bags and treats. This has not been the case in my 21 years of teaching, so I am looking for ways to still give students these experiences. Thank you for considering my project.
