I have a class of 28 energetic second graders! My school is located in a suburban neighborhood in Colorado. My students come from a variety of different backgrounds including skill levels and homes.
My students come to me at all different reading levels.
Some are way above where they should be, others are far below. What hooks kids into reading more than fresh, fun books! Books spark imagination, stimulate curiosity and help brain development! My second graders love to read and I would love to be able to help them continue this love for learning!
My Project
Second graders are awakening readers. They have traveled through kindergarten and first grade by learning the phonics of reading. They reach second grade, and it's time to wake them up to the exciting adventures that a good story can create. There is nothing more exciting than introducing students to a book in a series and then watching them want to continue to read books by the same author and about the same characters.
I want my students to be ALL in when it comes reading.
Getting the right titles is the perfect way to get conversations going, to have students be proactive about their reading, and for them to become true book lovers. I have requested over 50 books within this project! Many of the titles I have requested are from the "Branches" book line by Scholastic. The different series by this line are perfect for many second graders. These books are meant for an independent reader who is not ready for a traditional chapter book. The "Ivy and Bean" series are a favorite among many girls in many class and many of the boys like, "Dragon Master". In my project, I have included multiple titles from both these series, as well as a few others.
I have also requested powerful fiction picture books. I will use these books as mentor texts for interactive read alouds. These books are engaging and will provide students with the opportunity to practice reading comprehension. For example, reading and discussing "Sloppy Joe", is a great strategy for teaching character traits and "The Day the Crayons Quit" offers students fun and engaging opportunity to learn about perspective.
